S2 Week 10

So I took a few weeks break because school has been hectic right now. Sadly I was not able to actively work on my wonderful bacteria :(. But in the meantime,  I had taken more samples. What sucks is that there is a lack of skin type diversity. Oily and combination tends to be the most common skin type and with my samples it shows. This week, I also made media (TSA and TSB). I made it too late in the day and had to put them all in the fridge. The TSA was solid af. Matt suggested that I put the it on the melt cycle on the autoclave. So the next day I did exactly that, except one of the flask needed to be put on the melt cycle twice. Each melt cycle is 48 minutes each. So moral of the story, make sure you have enough time to pour your media.

S2 Week 5

I let the previous samples to incubate for 24+ hours. But sadly, I forgot about the samples and left them in the incubator for about 48 hours. I wanted to isolate the bacteria but they over grew. I used a loop to pick up a yellow and white colony and put the in separate TSA plates. I also made 2 streak plates to help isolate the bacteria but I let them overgrow so I need to do it again. The yellow and white bacteria grew too close to each other, so it will will to get the individual bacteria to test. So next week you guys already know what I will be doing.

S2 Week 4

I took skin samples from John and Francisco. The results were indeed great. I have changed now my procedures in comparison to when I took samples off my own face and Luisa's. I am not sure about all the samples skin type, but for a fact Luisa and I have combination skin. I believe John is normal and Francisco is oily. I have bought skin moisture analyzers and that should help determine skin type and the amount of moisture in the skin. I have assumptions yet but I still need more samples and data to conclude my thoughts. I'm excited to see what I will find :) .

 

S2 Week 3

Last week I did two facial samples. I read some research projects on my same topic and found out how I can do my research more effectively. I did not do my samples wrong but it could have been better. Firstly, it is to understand the health of each sample because if they are sick or easily to be sick, they can have differences in bacteria does not matter the skin type . This week, I spent the whole time reading so I can make a better project with proper direction. Here is the paper that has the great, wonderful direction and ideas.

Season 2 Week 2

Last week I took my own face sample but it wasn't until Saturday that I noticed that I put it in the fridge not the incubator. Can you believe that?

On Tuesday, I took Luisa's face samples and sent both Luisa's and mine's to the incubator this time. After this, I will need to identify our facial bacteria. I really need facial samples from makeup wearers and non-makeup wearers too. But look at the bacteria!!

Season 2: Week 1

Happy New School year everyone!! It feels so great to be able to start my new project on skin microbiome. It's not officially ready but I am looking for skin samples from people of various skin types and that uses makeup.

Week 14

It was my first time presenting. I was so anxious and I was sweating bad. But I don't think I did so bad. And the rest of you guys did great as well. 
I'm so glad for the semester to finally end. Thank you to my partner and all the other great interns who made my semester great. See you guys in the spring, I'll miss you guys.
